A Community of Artists will show recent work at its fifth exhibition at the Felix Kulpa Gallery June 3-June 26, 2011. Work will include paintings, photography, prints, mixed media, and video. A reception to meet the artists is on First Friday, June 3, 5:30-9:00 pm.

This year the group is holding a raffle of art donated by 16 of the artists. Proceeds will go to the Felix Kulpa Gallery, in appreciation for the support it has given to local artists under the encouragement of the imaginative director Robbie Schoen. Tickets ($5 each or 5 for $20) are available at the Gallery; the drawing will be on Opening Night June 3.

The Community of Artists includes traditional and non-traditional photographers Mark Wainer, Tim Kelly, Jim McKenzie, Ted Orland, Lisa Rose, and Jack Johnson, Helen Wallis, Catharina Marlowe; mixed media artists Sara Friedlander, A. Pike, Susan Dorf, Sally Jorgensen, Karen Kvenvold Bailey, Ken Koenig, Dennis High, and Judy Johnson Darrow.

Over 25 years, artists in the art group have come and gone, artistic techniques and media may have changed, but the group has sustained its conversation, its connection, and its purpose.  The members have led each other to greater confidence, clearer artistic vision, and better techniques.

There are always at least two essential mysteries when the art group meets; what food will be brought for the potluck dinner, and what art will be seen.  But a third mystery is at the heart of their gathering…what opinions will be shared. This is a group of artists asking questions of each other, wanting to know what each other did, how they did it, what they were seeing, what they are saying. Most importantly they have kept artmaking in their individual and collective consciousness on a day-to-day basis.  As Ted Orland often says, “The most important thing is to just keep working, the rest will come.”
