Curated by Michelle Stitz, this exhibition features a show of new mixed media paintings by Stitz in the main gallery, as well as thoughtfully selected works by Jody Alexander in the foyer. The show will run July 1 – July 31st, with an opening reception on Friday, July 1st from 5-9 pm.
The work in this show addresses both artists’ visceral needs for their respective processes, and the thematic ties that relate the two artists’ work. Navigating dark verses light, redactive reasoning, and essential personal rituals are some of the common themes present in the work of these nationally recognized Santa Cruz artists.
“Michelle Stitz creates emotive psychological landscapes and primordial fields of space in layers of transparent resin, carefully adapted oil paints and other mixed media materials. The show, White Balance includes a new departure series, Internal Medicine, as well as a recently revisited body of work in “oil in resin” (a technique she developed and named). Both series’ utilize a reduced color palette, distilling meaning into its most elemental
form and thereby more clearly exposing the artists’ symbology and the painting’s narrative content.”
“Jody Alexander is a book artist that incorporates found items into her work to create mixed media sculptural work and installations. The pieces in this exhibit metamorphasize the book into new forms and meaning, touching upon issues of worthiness, balance, and protection.”
Felix Kulpa Gallery is located at 107 Elm Street, Santa Cruz, and is open Thursday – Sunday, 12-6 pm. The July 1st opening reception (5-9 pm) coincides with the Santa Cruz First Friday event and is free and open to the public.
